克裏夫·理查是英國的貓王，在甲殼蟲樂隊還沒有出道之前，他統治著20世紀50年代和60年代初期的英國樂壇。他有眾多優秀作品，本人對音樂有一種本能的感覺。他在50年代後期的幾部作品讓英國的青少年對鄉村搖滾有了初步的認知。在1958年到1969年之間，理查至少有43首曲子進入金曲排行榜前20名。在英國，理查廣受歡迎，直到甲殼蟲樂隊興起之後，他的人氣才略略低落。但他在美國的市場則狹窄很多，即使在他的巔峰時期，他的作品也只有三首進入金曲排行榜前40位，分別是：1959年的《Living Doll》、1963年的《It's All in the Game》、1976年的《Devil Woman》。《Devil Woman》1976年進入美國金曲排行榜前十位。在英國樂壇，理查的地位非常崇高，他是英國有史以來最紅的歌手之一。在二十世紀流行音樂史上有著舉足輕重的地位，從他被稱為“英國貓王”就不難想像受歡迎的程度。理查1940年的十月十四日出生於印度，父母是在當地工作的英國人。他在八歲那年回到英國，還曾經因為膚色黝黑被誤為印度人而受盡排擠，但不久就適應了環境，加入學校的合唱團。
